What that man is holding is a real creature. Well, real as in it once roamed the seas. This picture is a production still from Walking With The Dinosaurs. Although, I don't know why. The creature model he is holding is a Eurypterid. They went extinct at the same time trilobites did, at the Permian-Triassic event. So, they died out just as dinosaurs were getting started.
But, eurypterids lived for a long time. The had their hey-days in the Ordovician and Silurian eras.
They were a predator to be feared. Their favorite tactic was to bury themselves in sand, and then burst out, grabbing their prey with their claws and then, well.....eating it.
Most of these buggers were about 4-12 inches long when fully grown.
You'll notice I said 'most'. There was one species, Jaekelopterus, that grew to over 8 feet long.
Not a critter you want to mess with.
Well folks, I hope you have enjoyed this weeks look at some of histories odd life. To be perfectly honest, I could continue the series for months showcasing oddities from lifes past. But I don't want to get people sick of the subject.
So, for Mondays post, I think you'll like what I have in store. It'll be a humorous look into an unexpected aspect of history.
