Yes. This sums it all up. Everything that is wrong with the world can be summed up in those three simple words;
I’m A Towel.
Oh good lord.....I tend to agree with Mrs. Grumpy Cat in this. I prefer to think of people as idiots. Why? Because they are. There are very few individuals who are not idiots. And, don’t take this the wrong way, but all of you reading this post are idiots. But that’s ok. Because the person writing this post is an idiot as well. I can safely say this because, speaking as an idiot myself, I’m an expert at recognizing idiots.
And I don’t mean to be insulting by calling everyone an idiot. I’m just being honest. Not everyone will be considered an idiot by everyone else, but someone will consider everyone to be an idiot sometimes. Wait....is that right? Someone...everyone...divided by sometimes....
Let me try to rephrase that; No matter who you are, there is someone out there who will think you’re an idiot for some reason.
Yeah. That’s better. That’s how I want to phrase it.
As you all know, I have been writing these daily oddity posts for almost 2 years now. I have come across a lot of oddities in that time. And a lot of stupidity. I can generally filter out the stupidity, but sometimes, it just overtakes me. It renders me incapable of coherent thought. The stupidity sucks the smart right out of my skull. (I use smart for lack of a better word. Remember, I’m an idiot too....)
Today is one of those days. Believe it or not, but I actually research these oddity posts. I try to find things that I genuinely feel others will enjoy. Are they always 100% on subject? No, but who cares. If they are enjoyable, I have succeeded.
Today, I fear, is a failure. Sitting at my desk, I’m doing my research. I found something, but it really would work better for a Thursday post, so I bookmark it and move on. I find something that has the potential to be a post, so I click the link and read. And all cognizant thought has been sucked out of my brain. I read a webpage that was so full of stupid that my brain has shut down. And as a result, todays oddity is going to be different.
I am a very open person when it comes to ideas. If you tell me something, I’ll listen. I might not agree with you, but that’s ok. I’ll still let you explain you’re reasoning. And, if you’d like, I can explain why I disagree with you. If you don’t want to hear it, that’s fine. You’ll just be filed under ‘Closed Minded’ in my memory and I’ll move on with my life. I am a firm believer that everyone is entitled to believe what they want, no matter how wrong they are. And yes, that includes me. Just because I believe something doesn’t make it right. That is why I separate my beliefs into different categories; Fact, Opinion, Crazy-Ass Shit and Deep Dark Secrets No One Will Ever Know.
I am one of those rare people that is able to separate facts from opinions in my own beliefs. I will argue with you and flat out tell you that you’re wrong when it comes to facts. With opinions, I’ll tell you what I believe and why I believe that, and let it go. (for the record, I have had my share of times when I was wrong about the facts. I generally will acknowledge when I’m wrong, and will alter the fact in my head so I am now correct. But only with facts, not with opinions)
One of the places where this leads to trouble is in the case of religion. The problem is, religion is faith-based. And since it’s based on faith, that makes it an opinion. And that’s the problem. People don’t like to have their religious beliefs labeled as an opinion. But, sadly, they are. I don’t say this to belittle anyones beliefs. But the fact is, if your religion is faith based, (like they all are), they have to be an opinion. Otherwise they would be fact based religions. You have faith that you are believing correctly. And it’s that faith which makes it opinion. Faith does not mean fact. It doesn’t mean it’s wrong, but it’s not fact. Faith means that they can’t supply the empirical proof needed to make it a universally recognized fact. You have to have faith in the belief that it’s true.
And that’s what led me to today. Someones faith. They mistook faith for fact. And, it’s not a new mistake either. It’s a very old one. And that mistake is Geocentrism.
Geocentrism is the belief that the Earth is the center of all. The big bang that created the universe? It was right here, where the Earth sits. The sun orbits us, not the other way around. Everything in the universe orbits us. Because we are the center of it all. That’s Geocentrism.
People, (especially religious people), have been teaching this for centuries. Galileo was almost put to death by the church for heresy for denouncing Geocentrism. It’s something that is easily disproven by science and fact and casual observation. yet, to this day, there are many many people who still believe in Geocentrism as fact. And it’s those people who have sucked all the smart out of me today.
One of the basic tenets of Geocentrism is, the Earth doesn’t rotate on it’s axis. If everything orbits the Earth, then the Earth must be stationary. What could possibly cause it to spin on it’s axis? Since they can’t think of anything, it must not spin. See? The logic is flawless!
My mistake was clicking on a link. Well....that was the first mistake. The second mistake was reading the first few paragraphs. The third, and final, mistake was reading the entire web age. It is a page called Earth Is Stationary Proofs. It’s just one of several pages on the website genesis-creation-proof.com. I generally try to ignore these types of websites because all they do is try to pass of junk science and supposition as proof.
I don’t know why I did it. But I had to read that website. And now, I’m shot. All I can do is post this rant about stupidity. But, it still counts as an oddity. Why? Because people believe it. There is no basis in fact for the belief. (just the stationary Earth part....I’m not getting into the genesis creation part right now). In fact, simple experiments anyone can do will prove that the Earth is spinning!
Anyway, this is what you get today. If you’re one of the people who believes in Geocentrism, I’m sorry for insulting you. But the facts stand with me, and not with you. And remember, just because you believe something, that doesn’t make it a fact.
